What's New in TriEdit

The latest changes, newest first.

Version 1.3.3

Latest

A new Format Shape window with colour pickers and fonts for the text in shapes.

Fonts and styles for shape text

Double-click a shape to open Format Shape. Pick the font and size of its text, and turn on bold, italic or underline with the buttons or with Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U. Leave the size on Auto and the text fits the shape. A preview shows every change before you click OK.

The same window is used for shapes on slides, and the text formatting is kept when you save as .docx or .pptx.

A colour picker for every colour

The fill, outline and text colours each open a colour picker like Word's: the theme colours with lighter and darker shades, the standard colours, the colours you used lately, and a custom colour. Pick a custom colour from the colour field and the rainbow bar, or type its code, such as #C00000.

The colour picker open under Fill colour, with theme, standard, recent and custom colours

Shapes on the page

Shapes show their text in the font, size and style you chose. On Windows, TriEdit now shows its own icon on the taskbar instead of a blank page.

Version 1.3.2

Fixes for tables, shapes, watermarks and page margins.

Type in tables

Click a cell and type: the text goes into the cell. Tab and Shift+Tab move between cells, Tab in the last cell adds a row, as in Word, and Escape takes you back to the text. The header row's colour, the page colour and the watermark now show behind the cells.

Resize pictures, charts and shapes

Point at a picture, chart or shape, or select it, and handles appear on its right edge, bottom edge and corner. Drag one: an outline shows the new size. Pictures keep their proportions from the corner. New shapes start at a sensible size, and nothing can grow larger than the page's text area.

Watermarks keep every letter

Watermarks are sized to fit the page, across the diagonal or straight across, in portrait and landscape, so long texts such as "STRICTLY PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL" show in full.

Margins and Page Setup

Layout > Margins shows Word's presets (Normal, Narrow, Moderate, Wide and Office 2003 Default) with a picture of the page and all four margins, and a tick on the one in use.

Custom Margins opens Page Setup: top, bottom, left and right in inches or centimetres, portrait or landscape, and a preview that follows every change.

Also in this version

  • Typing that is still in a table cell is saved with the document.
  • The Mailings tab (envelopes, labels and mail merge) has been removed. Documents that already contain merge fields still open and save as before.

Version 1.3.1

Better spelling checks, and a clear choice about counting installations.

  • Common words such as "because", "before", "between" and "believe" are no longer marked as mistakes, and neither are forms like "taken" and "children" or words like "website". Misspellings such as "begining" and "occured" are now caught.
  • On its first start TriEdit asks whether it may report the installation: only the operating system, its version and the processor type. Nothing is sent unless you choose Allow, and you can change it with Privacy on the Help tab.
  • A new privacy policy, also shown in the Windows setup, and the number of installations on the download page.

Version 1.3

The new Word-style ribbon on every tab of all three editors, with offline Dictate, a resume maker, built-in add-in tools and carved patterns for the interface.

The Word-style ribbon

Large, stacked and two-row buttons, drop-down and split buttons and vector icons on every tab. Undo and Redo grey out when there is nothing to undo, and the Styles list opens right under the Styles box.

Dictate

Speak and TriEdit types at the cursor. A Whisper speech model runs on your computer, downloaded once after asking (Fast, Balanced or Accurate), so dictation works offline and stays private.

Create Resume

A form beside a live preview, with five designs (Classic, Modern, Banner, Minimal and Compact), eight accent colours and a choice of font. The design lives in the document's styles, so it opens the same in Word.

Add-ins

A grid of offline tools: QR codes and barcodes, word clouds, Lorem Ipsum, the date and time, symbols and emoji, a unit converter, Clean Up Text, a table of contents and more. Your own snippets and templates go in the Add-ins folder.

Carved patterns

Eight patterns behind the title bar and ribbon, tinted with your interface colour: Botanical Network, Urban Grid, Galactic Flow, Wave Dynamics, Knotted Fabric, Cellular Structure, Ancient Knots and Geometric Fragment. Pick one in the Appearance menu.

Version 1.2

Interface colours: make TriEdit light, dark or follow your system, in the colour you like.

Appearance

The button next to Quit picks light, dark or the system's mode and the interface colour: ten presets (teal, blue, indigo, purple, pink, red, orange, gold, green and graphite), a slider for any other hue, or a colour code. The whole window, the ribbon, menus and dialogs follow it, and the choice is remembered. Documents keep their own colours.
